The Copper Curtain: How One Metal Could Decide the AI Age

Oil made the twentieth century. It financed wars, toppled governments, and drew borders we still argue over. The metal that may end up shaping the twenty-first is far less glamorous. Copper doesn’t burn or explode. It gets no cartel summits, no breathless tickers on cable news.

Yet without it, none of the machines we’ve decided to build this decade will run — and there is a real and growing chance the world cannot dig and refine enough of it in time. Start with what artificial intelligence actually is, physically. Strip away the talk of clouds and models and you are left with warehouses full of metal, drinking electricity. A data center is, quite literally, a copper machine: power lines in, busbars across, cabling everywhere, cooling rigs to keep the chips from melting. An ordinary facility might use five to fifteen thousand tonnes.

A single hyperscale AI campus can need fifty thousand. Hundreds of billions of dollars of these things are going up right now. By 2030, on current trends, data centers could be swallowing well over a million tonnes of copper a year — a few percent of everything the planet produces. Not long ago, analysts expected a glut. They were wrong.
