A renewed warmth in India Bangladesh relations

India’s relations with Bangladesh, which went under a period of strain after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina government and the succeeding interim Bangladesh government, now appear to be back on a cordial track, after the swearing in of Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Tarique Rahman as the new Prime Minister of the country. Rahman has clearly indicated that Bangladesh now wants a positive resetting of the ties with its most significant neighbour. It was significant that PM Modi was the first global leader to congratulate Tarique Rahman on his victory in the Bangladesh elections.

PM Modi noted that India and Bangladesh are close neighbours bound by deep-rooted historical and cultural ties. He reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the peace, progress and prosperity of both countries and their peoples. As PM Modi was busy in the AI summit, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla attended the swearing-in ceremony of the new Government of Bangladesh led by Prime Minister Shri Tarique Rahman in Dhaka and gave him a personal letter of PM Modi.

Modi in his letter to Tarique Rahman mentioned that as close neighbours, India and Bangladesh have a deep-rooted friendship founded on shared history, cultural ties, and the aspirations of our peoples for peace and prosperity and strong convergence between their respective developmental priorities shall serve as a guiding principle for future cooperation.
