BRICS calls for strengthening multilateralism

The XVI BRICS Summit, held from October 22 to 24, 2024 in Kazan, Russia, adopted the Kazan Declaration with the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security” which is a 134 point document covering 43 pages. The XVI BRICS Summit was significant on two accounts. First, it was the first meeting of an expanded BRICS and second, many countries of Global South showed a considerable interests in BRICS.

BRICS is an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The bloc was formed in 2009 comprising of Brazil, Russia, India and China. In 2010, South Africa was admitted into the bloc.

During the 15th BRICS Summit at Johannesburg, six new countries – Argentina (which later pulled out), Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)- were admitted into BRICS.
