India–New Zealand Sign FTA: A Landmark in Bilateral Relations
India and New Zealand have written a significant chapter in bilateral relations with the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The landmark moment came on April 27, 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi when the Agreement was signed by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and New Zealand’s Minister for Trade and Investment Todd McClay. The signing was the successful fruition of around 13 months and five rounds of negotiations.
The significance of the India–New Zealand FTA can be gauged from the remarks of Todd McClay calling it a “once-in-a-generation” opportunity that will boost exports, create jobs, and strengthen bilateral economic ties. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon commented that the signing of the FTA is not merely significant in economic terms but has important strategic connotations attached to it in an era of global uncertainty. “ This FTA is a clear commitment by both sides to stable, predictable, and rules-based trade.
And the India-New Zealand story is about more than trade. New Zealand and India are building a relationship that is bigger, deeper and more exciting every year – across trade, investment, defence, sport, and innovation,” Luxon remarked.
