Seychelles President’s India Visit Provides New Impetus to India–Seychelles Relations

Seychelles, a key littoral country in the Indian Ocean, occupies an important strategic calculus in India’s vision MAHASAGAR, an acronym for “Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth. With Seychelles, India has enhanced regional maritime security, anti-piracy patrols, and surveillance missions across key sea lanes of the north-western Indian Ocean since Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined the tenets of vision MAHASAGAR. The recent Indian visit of the President of the Republic of Seychelles Dr.

Patrick Herminie and his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 9, 2026, further reinforced the development and maritime security partnership between the two countries. During his meeting with Seychelles President, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that maritime security and defence cooperation are important pillars of the partnership between the two countries. PM Modi also reiterated that Seychelles is an important maritime partner in India’s vision of MAHASAGAR.

The most significant outcome of the visit was the announcement of the Joint Vision for Sustainability, Economic Growth and Security through Enhanced Linkages (SESEL).
